Debating the European Constitution
From the Leicester Mercury
An MP has said that co-operation between Britain and the European Union is key to economic success.
Keith Vaz, the MP for Leicester East, said the EU's Lisbon Agenda - to make Europe "the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world by 2010" - was central to the city's future.
The agenda sets out goals that include fighting social exclusion and sustainable development.
"My constituents in Leicester East need the Lisbon Agenda to succeed," Mr Vaz said, in an adjournment debate at Westminster.
"Many businesses trade with Europe. The main problem they have is the over-regulated way in which some EU countries operate.
"Jobs will be created in Leicester if the goals set out in the Lisbon Agenda are met."
